Intelligence quotient, or IQ, originated in the early 20‑century attempts to quantify school performance. Modern tests are norm‑referenced: a large sample establishes a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Scores are expressed as how many points a person lies above or below that mean, assuming a roughly bell‑shaped distribution. The design purpose is to compare individuals within the same age group, not to assign absolute worth.
Because the scale is anchored to a reference population, a score of 130 indicates performance two standard deviations above the average—roughly the top 2 % of the group. However, test content, language demands, and socioeconomic background can shift where an individual lands. Moreover, IQ captures only certain problem‑solving and verbal abilities; memory, creativity, and practical judgment are measured elsewhere. Recognizing these boundaries prevents overgeneralizing the meaning of any single number.
